The Caspase family of cysteine proteases has a crucial role in apoptosis. Caspases act in a cascade culminating in protein cleavage, disassembly of cell structures and cell death. The Caspase cascade may be induced by various stimuli from the cell surface or from mitochondria. Caspases exist in cells as an inactive precursor from.
